Experiences in community partnership and suggestions for effective strategies for library outreach to Asian Pacific American communities were also shared & discussed.

The program was extremely well attended and received, with about 80 people in the audience. A lively Q&A session & discussion followed the presentations.

After the program, the Chapter held its membership meeting/election, presided over by Jiun Kuo, Chapter President. The new officers for 2003-2004 are:

President
Rosa Hsu
Acquisitions Librarian
Houston Community College System
hsu_r@hccs.cc.tx.us

Vice President/President-Elect
Peyyi Wann
Collection Management Specialist (Self-employed)/MLS student, Texas Woman’s University
p.wann@att.net

Treasurer
Shelley Mao
Head of Bibliographical Control
W.I. Dykes Library
Univ. of Houston Downtown
maos@uhd.edu

A luncheon was held, following the program/membership meeting, at Kim Son Restaurant to honor our three speakers & to recognize the three recently retired CALA librarians from this area. They are:

Virginia An
Retired from Houston Baptist University

Helen Chang
Retired from the Houston Community College System

Ching Eue
Retired from the Houston Public Library

On a personal note, it was a very moving day for me. As the retired members continue to support & mentor the practicing librarians, the active CALA members are giving their best to further expand their professional growth & gain visibility state-wide & nationally. However, what inspires me the most is to witness the emergence of the young & energetic new generation of CALA librarians who are eager to test the water and get involved.

Thanks to everyone who helped make our program a big success, and most of all, thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve CALA in the capacity of the Southwest Chapter President this year.
