Participating members enjoyed a very informative presentation and many books brought along by Eileen Liu for her presentation ended in the hands of our members after the presentation. As always, the Southwest Chapter sponsored the program “Serving Non-English Speaking Patrons in an E-environment” with three guest speakers from three universities to share their work experience and knowledge. This program focused on meeting the electronic information needs of non-English speaking patrons. Panelists provided insights on access, reference, and user need evaluation specifically related to library electronic resources collection. Our incoming president, Diana Wu, shared with the audience her knowledge and experience in virtual multilingual referencing with models implemented by San Jose State University Library and other institutions. CALA’s board member Holly Yu analyzed the university library web site redesign project at California State University, Los Angeles, from user needs study, interface design, to usability testing. Dr. Hsin-Liang Chen from University of Texas, Austin, shared his knowledge in user needs assessment and study through the course content and student projects of his course, “Understanding and Serving Users.” With this program, we were able to present three focus areas from three institutions to raise awareness in serving immigrant library users, and I was pleased to see the enthusiasm shared by our audience after the program as they presented questions and compliments to our guest panelists.

Additionally, southwest chapter members participated in the rally “Get Texas Libraries Out of the Red!” along with some 2000 librarians in front of the state capital on April 7th. To many of us who participated, this first rally experience in our life time resonated well with our professional passion and belief; and I, for one, felt quite inspired by the speeches from such leaders in our profession as Carol Brey-Casiano (ALA president), Dana Rooks (TLA president), and others. As Carol Brey-Casiano expressed in the “President’s Message” of the June/July 2005 issue of American Libraries, such grassroots advocacy for libraries will make our voice loud and unified. Many CALA Southwest Chapter members were proud to participate in this symbolic event. Shelley Mao will continue to serve as the chapter treasurer, with Rosa Hsu as our membership officer and George Teoh as the programming officer. To our chapter officers, I would like to thank all of you for your continuing commitment to the Southwest Chapter and CALA as well as congratulate all of you for your outstanding service. In addition, our member and past chapter president, George Teoh, has been elected as chair for the Texas Council of Academic Libraries, as well as chair for the Community College Group. Congratulations to George for his professional achievement. Last but not the least, on behalf of the Southwest Chapter, I like to thank Shelley Mao, our chapter treasurer, for her generous gift of $200 to the Southwest Chapter. Her donation will be appropriated to the chapter’s general operating fund for chapter programs.

Submitted by Peyyi Wann (President)

(1) Southwest Chapter held a holiday gathering on Nov. 6th and invited Eileen Liu from Tsai Feng Books, Inc. to be our guest speaker presenting newly released and popular books in Chinese, including fictions, non-fiction, and children’s literature.
